Celebrate National Pi Day with a Slice of Math and History: Trivia, Facts, and Recipes

 image

March 14 is celebrated as Pi Day in honor of the mathematical constant pi, and it also happens to be the birthday of famous physicist Albert Einstein.

However, there is no evidence that Einstein ever made jokes about the coincidence. In fact, Einstein's life was much more than just his scientific contributions.

In celebration of Pi Day, here are five fun facts about this national holiday founded in 1988:
  1. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 because the first three digits of pi are 3.14.
  2. Pi is an irrational number, which means it cannot be expressed as a simple fraction.
  3. Pi has been calculated to over a trillion digits beyond its decimal point, but for most calculations, just 3.14 or 22/7 is enough.
  4. The Guinness World Record for the most digits of pi memorized is held by Rajveer Meena of India who recited 70,000 digits in 2015.
  5. In 2009, the US House of Representatives recognized March 14 as National Pi Day.
Here are some deals that you can take advantage during Pi Day:

Fun facts about Albert Einstein

  1) Einstein didn't like wearing socks. Apparently, no matter how smart you are, socks will inevitably get holes in them. For this reason (seriously), Einstein never wore socks. He even boasted to his friends that, while a student at Oxford, he got away with not wearing socks . I disagree with Einstein, socks are cool as long as they have a cool design.
